Testing the kinetic energy functional : Kinetic energy density as a density functional
A new method for defining an energy density for the noninteracting kinetic energy of density functional theory is given. The resulting energy density is a density functional determined completely by the kinetic energy functional itself. Although this method is not constructive, it allows for a direct comparison between exact and approximate functionals pointwise in space. For simple systems, th...
متن کاملEnergy density functional on a microscopic basis
In recent years impressive progress has been made in the development of highly accurate energy density functionals, which allow to treat medium-heavy nuclei. In this approach one tries to describe not only the ground state but also the first relevant excited states. In general, higher accuracy requires a larger set of parameters, which must be carefully chosen to avoid redundancy. Following thi...
متن کاملEnergy density functional approach to superfluid nuclei.
We show that, within the framework of a simple local nuclear energy density functional (EDF), one can describe accurately the one- and two-nucleon separation energies of semimagic nuclei. While for the normal part of the EDF we use previously suggested parametrizations, for the superfluid part of the EDF we use the simplest possible local form compatible with known nuclear symmetries.
متن کاملRelativistic Energy Density Functional for Astrophysical Applications
Relativistic nuclear energy density functionals (RNEDF) have become a standard framework for nuclear structure studies of ground-state properties and collective excitations over the entire nuclide chart [1]. By employing recent observational constraints on the neutron star mass, a universal RNEDF has been established that simultaneously describes the properties of finite nuclei and neutron star...
متن کاملConventional Quantum Chemical Correlation Energy versus Density - Functional Correlation Energy
We analyze the difference between the correlation energy as defined within the conventional quantum chemistry framework and its namesake in density-functional theory. Both quantities are rigorously defined concepts; one finds that E QC c ≥ E DF T c. We give numerical and analytical arguments suggesting that the numerical difference between the two rigorous quantities is small. Finally, approxim...
